Howdy Partners!!!  Its book fair time again.  We are so excited for our Buy One Get One Free Book Fair this fall!  If you can help in any way, please contact Jenn Oxborrow @ 435-232-1925.  We will need lots of help if we are going to keep having book fairs.  One thing that will be different from last fair is that we will not be open in the mornings before school.  We want all children to be able to have breakfast and be on time for class. We will be open for all recesses and after school though! Thank you for your support!  Remember this fair is a great time to stock up on books for Christmas!!

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Oakwood Elementary School

September 25, 2017
Dear Parents,
Parent-Teacher Conferences for Oakwood Elementary have been scheduled for Thursday, October 5th from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please note that elementary students do not have school that day.  The Special Service Teachers--resource teacher, special education educator, psychologist, speech pathologist--will be in their rooms if you would like to meet with them on a walk-in basis.
We would like to visit with parents of each student.  Conferences will be by appointment. Please indicate below your preference for an hour to attend.  We will try our best to accommodate your needs, but we request that you give us a first and second choice in order to work out any scheduling conflicts.  If you have one or more children attending Oakwood or Pioneer, we will schedule your conferences close together.  If you are unable to attend, you will have the option of a conference via telephone.
Please return the attached form to your child’s teacher this week.  A note confirming your conference time will follow.  If these dates and times are not convenient, please contact your child’s teacher to schedule another time.  We feel that conferences are very beneficial to student progress and encourage your attendance.
 Sincerely,

 Kaylynn Hamblin, Principal

Oakwood Elementary September 2017 Newsletter

       Welcome Back Eagles!

Calendar Items: ✓ There is no school on Labor Day, September 4th. ✓ Ireland bank will be here on Wednesdays for Save for America starting on September 7th.   ✓ Picture day is on September 13th.

Here are a few reminders about our drop-off and pick-up procedures: ✓ Please do not leave your vehicle in the loading and unloading area.  If you need to enter the building, please park in a space available or on the street. ✓ If you park in a space to wait for your student (or drop them off) please walk to the building and walk with your student.  This will avoid having your student run, unaccompanied, through the moving stream of traffic. ✓ Dropping students off and picking them up next to the sidewalk in the south parking area is permitted as long as students are exiting the vehicle directly to the sidewalk.

You can help us out by doing the following: ✓ Please call the school by 9:00 if your child will not be attending school for the day. ✓ Make sure your student’s name is in their jacket and/or coat. ✓ Make sure your child knows where they are going after school before they leave your house in the morning.   ✓ Parents who will be picking their children up after school need to be at the school prior to dismissal.  Once students have left their classrooms and are on the bus, parents should meet their students at home or the neighborhood bus stop.  Students will not be called off the bus.

PTO CORNER: ✓ Family Movie Night will be held on Friday, September 8th.  It starts at 6:30 p.m.  We will have food, family friendly games, silent auction.  The movie is Aladdin and will start at dark. ✓ The next Box Top contest starts on September 18th.  Help Oakwood keep the trophy!

COUNSELOR CORNER: My name is Austin Adamson. I am the school counselor for Oakwood Elementary and one of two school psychologists for Preston School District. In my school psychologist’s role, I primarily assist with evaluations to determine student need for special education services. As the Oakwood counselor, I am involved in a wide range of activities. One of those activities includes helping students feel included and safe at school. My predecessor, Mr. Manley started the Bully Blockers program several years ago where students learned positive strategies for dealing with a bully situation.

I will be building on this program and adding a component called “Be S.A.F.E.” The S.A.F.E. acronym stands for “Students Are Friends Everywhere.” Oakwood students will learn various ways to be friendly to others and include peers that appear to be lonely or left out. Bullies tend to gravitate towards students like this because of the decreased likelihood that they will be challenged. Students also sometimes bully others because they feel like they have no friends or are not being included by others. We invite you to help with the Be S.A.F.E. program by asking your child on a weekly basis about peers they may have noticed that seem to be lonely. Brainstorm ways with your child that they could use to help their peers be more included.
Does your child want to be in the orchestra?
Missed me at back to school night?
It's not too late to sign up!
Send an email to me at jill.durrant@psd201.org before Sept. 6 and I can add your child to the class.
The Oakwood Elementary Orchestra needs YOU!...
The parent meeting and instrument rental night is Sept.7, starting at 6 p.m. in the Jr. High School Music Room
As a reminder, school begins Tuesday, August 22nd.
Breakfast will be served in the cafeteria before school this year. It will still be free of charge. The cafeteria will be open from 7:30-8:00 a.m. for those who would like to eat breakfast. Students who are dropped off at school can enter the cafeteria from the front doors. Those riding a bus will enter the cafeteria from the playground cafeteria door.
We are excited to start school!

Just a quick reminder of the procedures for pick up and dropping off students in front of the school. Thank you for helping us maintain the safety of students by following these procedures.
1. All pick-up and drop-off of students will be along the sidewalk on the west side of Oakwood.
2. In order to keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible, parents will not be allowed to leave their vehicle unless they are parked in a parking space or on the road.
3. If drivers are not able to get into a pick-up/drop-off spot they should exit the lot and circle around to enter again.
4. Please do not arrive to drop off your students before 7:40 a.m. Please do not arrive to pick up your students before 3:40 p.m.

Counselor’s Corner
Struggling with your child over math, science, and reading homework every night ranks high on most parents’ Least-Favorite list. And yet, the work must be done in order for the child to succeed in school. How is a parent to cope?

Here are some tips to guide the way:
1. Know the teachers — and what they're looking for. Attend school events, such as parent-teacher conferences, to meet your child's teachers. Ask about their homework policies and how you should be involved.
2. Set up a homework-friendly area. Make sure kids have a well-lit place to complete homework. Keep supplies — paper, pencils, glue, scissors — within reach.
3. Schedule a regular study time. Some kids work best in the afternoon, following a snack and play period; others may prefer to wait until after dinner.
4. Help them make a plan. On heavy homework nights or when there is an especially hefty assignment to tackle, encourage your child break up the work into manageable chunks. Create a work schedule for the night if necessary
— and take time for a break.
5. Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no TV, loud music, or phone calls. (Occasionally, though, a phone call to a classmate about an assignment can be helpful.)
6. Make sure kids do their own work. They will not learn if they do not think for themselves and make their own mistakes. Parents can make suggestions and help with directions. But it's a kid's job to do the learning.
7. Be a motivator and monitor. Ask about assignments, quizzes, and tests. Give encouragement, check completed homework, and make yourself available for questions and concerns.
8. Set a good example. Do your kids ever see you diligently balancing your budget or reading a book? Kids are more likely to follow their parents' examples than their advice.
9. Praise their work and efforts. Post an aced test or art project on the refrigerator. Mention academic achievements to relatives.
10. If there are continuing problems with homework, get help. Talk about it with your child's teacher. Some kids have trouble seeing the board and may need glasses; others might need an evaluation for a learning problem or attention disorder.

Counselor’s Corner
Respect is Learned: The need for people to live in harmony with one another is increasing. As our society becomes more violent it is important to encourage respectful behavior in children, families, communities, and our world. In a world made smaller by social media and online communities, cooperation among individuals, concern for others, and support among different groups of people become important skills. Encouraging children to respect themselves and others will help to eliminate injustice, hate, and violence. This respect needs to start at home.

Respect has different meanings for different people. To learn respect children must first be respected. For example, treat others as you would like to be treated. Qualities such as empathy, compassion, kindness, and caring must be taught. If a parent fears a compassionate child will be teased or bullied, respectful assertiveness is needed. Remember to have a daily goal to demonstrate and encourage respectful behavior. Being respectful one time isn't enough, encouraging respect is a 24-hour-a-day responsibility. Consistently showing respectful behavior toward yourself and others is an important part of encouraging these behaviors in our children.

Here are some other ideas to help encourage respectful behavior.
* Apologize to children when you’re wrong.
* Be courteous and respectful in everyday requests.
* Use “Thank you”, “Please”, and “Excuse me”.
* Show approval when children show empathy and caring.
* Help children focus on the feelings of others.
* Help children develop a sense of morality.
* Bring up caring, fairness and cooperation in everyday situations.
* Model self-respect.
* Encourage your children to find ways to help others.

PTO Corner
We hope everyone has a great holiday and will set some great goals for 2017. The PTO has set some goals for the new year as well. We hope to see everyone at our PTO meeting. It will be held on Wednesday, January 11th at 4:15 p.m. in Pioneer’s Library. Also, we hope everyone is still collecting box tops for our next competition.
Each quarter, a student is chosen from every class for outstanding behavior and achievement. These Golden Eagles/Student of the Quarter, are treated to a pizza and root beer float lunch. Oakwood Elementary would like to thank the PTO for funding this special award. The PTO does so much to help our schools and we appreciate their hard work.
Parents:

Thank you all for your patience with the new pick-up, drop-off procedures at Oakwood/Pioneer.  Though it was not perfect for everyone, we did see some good success and with your help, it will get even better.  Just a couple of reminders:
1.     All drop-off and pick-up should be next to the sidewalk.  It is ok to cross the white line.
2.     Please do not leave your vehicle at any point in the pick-up and drop-off area.
3.     Please note there are visitor and 10-minue parking areas for those that need to enter the building.
4.     Right and Left turns are allowed at the exit point.
Thank you all again for your patience and help.  If you have concerns, suggestions, etc for the pick-up and drop-off please email Mr. Gee at marc.gee@psd201.org.
We love our lunch ladies and Jay, they make each holiday special.
Thanks for all you do!
