Bully Prevention: What parent doesn't feel pained when their child comes home with stories of being excluded? Social belonging is an essential human need. Belonging to social groups serves an important role in shaping our social identities. Relational bullying refers to the use of social networks, either in the ‘real world’ or online, to be hurtful to someone by spreading gossip, encouraging exclusion, and using other covert forms of personal attack. The desire to jump into action and "fix" things can be strong. Stepping in as you might have when they were younger is not necessarily the best way to help them. Instead it's important to show your support and help them gain confidence. At Oakwood we work to promote healthy friendships and encourage students to work towards solutions on their own. Of course there are times when adult intervention is necessary, and it is in those moments that we can provide opportunities for personal growth. By encouraging our students to practice these skills today, they will be better prepared for the problems of tomorrow.
